Schneeballen!
Schneeballen (snowballs) are apparently quite popular in Germany. Or at least they are in Heidelberg where I passed windows upon windows of these large pastry balls and knew I had to try one (or six, or twelve).

They're essentially fried balls made of scraps of pie dough and topped with various sugars or chocolate. Some have fillings (marzipan, caramel, etc.). I chose a butter cinnamon sugar one:
It was awesome. A little bit like, well, fried dough in the States, but crunchy not soft. I might try to recreate one with all the sad pie dough scraps sitting in my fridge waiting to be a whole pie crust.
